Kids Help Phone and Bell Canada Invite Canadians to Join the Fifth Annual Bell Walk for Kids Help Phone



Toronto (April 5, 2006) Kids Help Phone and Bell Canada today kicked off the fifth annual Bell Walk for Kids Help Phone campaign to raise much needed funds to meet the growing demand for the charity’s phone and web counselling services. Events were held in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver announcing that the Bell Walk for Kids Help Phone will take place on Sunday, May 7th, in more than 45 communities from coast to coast.

The Bell Walk for Kids Help Phone is the largest national fundraising event dedicated to helping ensure that Kids Help Phone will be there on the phone and online when troubled and abused kids reach out for support, information and hope. The goal for this year’s event is $2.5 million, up from $2.1 million raised in 2005.

"In 2005, Kids Help Phone’s counsellors helped kids in need more than one million times through our phone and online services," said Bill Saul, President and CEO, Kids Help Phone. "Funds raised through the Bell Walk for Kids Help Phone will help us enhance our website and hire the additional counsellors we need to meet the ever-increasing demand from kids."

"As a founding partner of Kids Help Phone, it is a priority for us to ensure that the organization has the tools, resources and funding it needs to continue to do its vital work as counsellor, advocate and advisor to and on behalf of Canadian children," stated Kevin Crull, President, Residential Services, Bell Canada. "We invite walkers from across the country to join us on Sunday, May 7th. Together we can make a real difference in the lives of Canadian children."

Underscoring the need for increased funding, Kids Help Phone today released a new study on bullying among Canadian children and youth. The report, "Make it Stop: Kids Talk to Kids Help Phone About Bullying" (PDF), is based on 625 bullying-related posts to the organization’s website and more than 4,300 phone calls from 2005.

"The report shows in a very compelling way, how bullying destroys young lives. It also shows that bullying is a problem all across the country because we have received calls and online posts from kids in every part of Canada," said Donna Hansplant, Vice President, Child and Family Services, Kids Help Phone, and co-author of the study. "The report also provides concrete recommendations on how kids, parents and teachers can deal with this serious problem. Our goal is provide insight into the issue and to help children and adults deal with the bullying problem."
